Trained at the Llotja de Barcelona with Fèlix Mestres, Josep Mongrell and Ángel Ferrant, at the end of the Civil War he went into exile in France, where he lived until his death, first in Perpignan, then in Paris and Saint Tropez; from there he gained wide international recognition. He was associated with the so-called School of Paris, along with Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Joan Miró and Antonio Saura. He moved through intimate realism, expressionism and symbolism, until he moved towards informalism and experimental abstraction.
He was one of the contemporary Catalan artists with the greatest international presence, with exhibitions and awards, such as the UNESCO prize at the 1956 Venice Biennale.
